How Crystals Work

There’s a lot about crystals that people don’t understand. They’ve fallen into the false belief that either crystals are just rocks and nothing more, or that crystals are just another form of woo woo bullsh*t. So, I’m gonna share some science behind how crystals work, because I feel that to truly believe in the power that crystals hold, you need to understand how they actually work.

So how do they work?

Crystals are believed to work with the energy fields around us/all living things. Where there is energy, a crystal will pick up on it and either amplify, reject or convert the energy it picks up on.

How do they do that?

Well to understand that you first need to understand how crystals are formed…

Crystals are formed through a process called Crystallization. This process involves:

Nucleation: When molecules or atoms that are driven by the outside conditions come to together.

Growth: More molecules or atoms are attracted to this formation, so they come together

Assembly: More atoms or molecules attach to this formation, creating a 3-dimensional lattice structure.

Energy can be defined in different ways, and there are several forms of energy, but crystals are made of

Vibrational Energy
Lattice Energy and
Chemical Bond Energy

Vibrational Energy – Understood by quantum mechanics, vibrational energy is energy formed through continuous, rhythmic movement at a molecular and atomic level.

Lattice Energy – Is the energy exchange that happens when gaseous ions react to form solid ionic compounds.

Chemical Bond Energy – Is the attraction between two or more atoms and the strength of the bond they create.

Now…chemical bond energy is made up of potential energy. Potential energy can also be known as “The energy of possibilities”. Potential energy exists due to its position or condition. Think of a raised object (like someone holding a stick/ball up) or think about a battery or a stretched elastic band. Those are all examples of potential energy. It is energy stored in a physical object which then gets transferred to a different form of energy when the strain is released. Even the food we eat is potential energy because once it is broken down, it then fuels us.

Still with me?…There are different forms of potential energy that I won’t get into as I think that is a rabbit hole for another time…

So…quick summary of what we’ve just learnt:

Crystals are formed under a process called crystallization, which is basically atoms or molecules coming together to form a 3-dimensional lattice grid.

Within this chemical formation crystals have vibrational energy, lattice energy and chemical bond energy.

Within chemical bond energy, there is potential energy which can only be released through an action.

I know…I probably still haven’t answered your question but bare with me…

When we look at Einstein’s theory and quantum physics, everything is energy. EVERYTHING. Without getting too philosophical about this fact…everything is energy. Meaning that there is so much of what we can’t see, that is actually alive.

So we know that crystals are formed by different energies, and we now know that everything in this entire universe is energy, including every little part of us humans.

Again, so how do crystals work?

Like I said earlier, crystals work with the energy fields they are in or are around them. Meaning, if you were emitting a positive energy, the crystal you’re holding is going to feel that too. And vice versa. Crystals are filled with vibrational and potential energy. Vibrations/movement we have absolutely no chance of seeing with our eyes (unless we are deeply meditative of course), but our own atoms and molecules will pick up on it. This is why some people can feel tingles, vibrations or warmth from holding a crystal in their hands. Crystals communicate with us on a molecular and atomic level. Is that not f*cking incredible? These naturally occurring formations communicate with us, in a way that’s so special.

Can you tell me a bit more about them?

Absolutely!

So, crystals have been around since the dawn of time basically (or near enough). They have a rich history amongst humanity and have been treasured for their beauty, powers and healing properties.

When you combine the powers, respect and understandings of science, symbolism and spirituality, you can see why crystals have their own personalities.

Let’s take hematite for example:

Science (or geology I suppose) – Hematite, (Iron & Oxygen) it’s the most abundant iron oxide mineral in the world. Known and recognised for its metallic appearance, it can also come in black – reddish brown. Hematite can be found worldwide, but it is most abundant in Australia, Russia, India and South Africa.

Symbolism – When you look at Hematite, what do you see? What does it make you feel? These are the key words I’d use to describe what I see when I look at Hematite:

Heavy
Protect
Dense
Safe
Weighty
Masculine
Warrior
Other worldly
A home

Do you see any of that? Or perhaps you had some that I didn’t list (I’d love to know!)

When you take the appearance of Hematite, you create meaning of it.

Hematite is well known, used and respected for its ability to ground people. To keep them steady and to keep their feet on the floor. It’s known to help people with busy minds, to help with grief and balance emotions. It’s known for its ability to absorb negative energies and turn them into positive ones.

Hematite is the stone that will help you carry your weight. It’s the stone that will help you find balance and to help you get through each day. Although not one of the prettiest minerals out there, it is one that is well respected for it’s powers and abilities to help people.

Spirituality does tie in quite heavily with crystals, because of what they are capable of when the energy is clean, intuitive and grounded, but it doesn’t make them woo woo bullsh*t. The science is right there

Crystals are energy
Energy is everything

Some little notes:

* When working with crystals it is vital to be aware of the energy you have beforehand
* Crystals need a purpose in order to work
* Crystals can be lab made. This will obviously significantly affect the crystal and its abilities. Think of lab grown crystals as lab grown food, it just isn’t right and doesn’t have the same nutrients. Ask your crystal supplier where they get their crystals from and do some research beforehand. If you are convinced you haven’t felt anything from the crystals you’ve touched/owned, this could be why.
* Crystals don’t just fall into the spiritual category, they fall into science, geology, physics, ancient history and geography.

Science would argue that there is no concrete evidence to support this but I believe (and I hope you now have some idea) that the evidence is literally right there. You just have to connect the dots.

Admittedly I am a firm believer that the reason these dots haven’t been connected for us is because the powers up there don’t want us to utilise the powers of crystals and the independence they can bring us. When you’re open to it, crystals are incredible tools that have been naturally provided to us. But like most things like that, they have been exploited, capitalised and their true reputation has been shredded.

I hope you found this article useful.
